Koch Cancer Research Building Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins ¥ Baltimore, Maryland Description This activity is designed to educate the practicing Pulmonologist and Chest Surgeon, as well as other health care professionals, interested in the care of patients with pleural disease. The objectives of the activity are to review pleural pathophysiology, discuss in detail the evaluation and management of patients with pleural effusion and pneumothorax, as well describe and demonstrate the use of ultrasound to guide pleural intervention. Participants will develop an understanding of the indications, contraindications and associated complications of common pleural procedures including thoracentesis, chest tube and indwelling pleural catheter placement, pleural biopsy and thoracoscopy. All procedures will be discussed in the didactic sessions, as well as practiced in the hands-on stations in the animal lab. Who Should Attend This activity is intended for pulmonologists and chest surgeons, physician assistants as well as other health care professionals interested in the care of patients with pleural disease. Objectives After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to: - Review pleural pathophysiology. - Discuss in detail the evaluation and management of patients with pleural effusion and pneumothorax. - Use ultrasound to guide pleural intervention.
