Johns Hopkins Medicine Continuing Medical Education The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Lipid Clinic Presents 18th Annual Lipid Disorders Training Center Programs Basic Course Thursday-Friday, October 22 - 23, 2009 Advanced Update Saturday, October 24, 2009 This activity is jointly provided by The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Thomas B. Turner Building The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Baltimore, Maryland 18th Annual Lipid Disorders Training Center Programs Basic Course October 22-23, 2009 Description Cardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death in the United States for 2009. Diabetes mellitus, high blood cholesterol and other lipids, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, overweight and obesity and physical inactivity remain atop the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Due to disease prevalence, there is a constant influx of new or modified drugs, novel risk factors to understand and improved laboratory tests to interpret in the area of dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease. Even with constant advances in the field, the fundamental basis of inherited lipid diseases is often misunderstood. Utilizing didactic lecture, case presentations and workshops, this two-day course will provide the practical science necessary to operate a lipid clinic. Disease states from pathophysiology to clinical care and multiple therapeutic options for combating them will be explored. Combination therapeutics, including pharmacotherapy, diet and exercise, are presented for multiple scenarios. WHO SHOULD ATTEND This activity is intended for Cardiologists, Internists, Family Practitioners, Pediatricians, Endocrinologists, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Dietitians, Pharmacists and Physician Assistants. Objectives After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to: v Identify abnormal lipid lab results and apply latest diagnostic tests v Utilize the latest information on the efficacy and side effects of lipid-altering drugs v Manage the most difficult cases of dyslipidemia v Apply information from review of pathways of lipid metabolism Accreditation Statement This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Advanced Update October 24, 2009 Description The level of sophistication and knowledge of lipidology is increasing in all medical specialties. While many physicians and medical specialists are gaining the knowledge to prevent and/or manage common lipid disorders, there is a growing need for those with greater interest and knowledge in the field to share ground-breaking research and explore controversial areas that may stimulate more sophisticated clinical care. This activity expands upon the requisite knowledge of lipid disorders and analyzes more complex diagnosis and treatment methods to manage complicated cases. WHO SHOULD ATTEND This activity is intended for Cardiologists, Internists, Family Practitioners, Pediatricians, Endocrinologists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Dietitians and Pharmacists. Objectives After attending this activity, the participant should be able to: v Apply the latest sophisticated information from genetic disorders to the diagnosis and treatment of dyslipidemias v Identify patients who are more likely to have a defect in the SR-B1 receptor as the basis for their elevated HDL v Utilize information from the vascular biological basis of atherosclerosis to understand the pathogenesis of dyslipidemia and CVD v Add the determination of hsCRP to clinical evaluation and treatment of patients with normal LDL-C but elevated hsCRP v Implement the latest advances in the dietary treatment of dyslipidemia v Apply the latest information on non-traditional risk factors to the evaluation of patients with CVD but normolipidemia v Employ the pathways in the brain and adipose tissue to treat the components of the cardiometabolic syndrome Accreditation Statement This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing.
