22nd Update Frontiers in Research and Clinical Management of Asthma and Allergy From Bench to Bedside Friday June 11, 2010 Johns Hopkins Asthma and Allergy Center at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Baltimore, Maryland Presented by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Description Allergic respiratory diseases have experienced an increased incidence and prevalence over the past decade. Allergic rhinitis now affects 60 million people in the U.S. and asthma, principally defined to be allergic in the majority of patients, is a burden to 24 million people. Allergic rhinitis and asthma represent a major socioeconomic burden to our society, incurring combined direct costs of $16 billion and an additional $10-12 billion in indirect costs. The recent update of the guidelines from the NHLBI, through the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program for the diagnosis and management of asthma, has been widely disseminated and publicized but still has not been effectively implemented in many health care settings across the country. This year’s program will focus on state-of-the-art advances in molecular biology of allergic disease, constructs, including TLR constructs, sublingual immunotherapy, and discussion of rational pharmacotherapy with an emphasis on newly approved therapeutic agents. The conference will take a penetrating look at research on clinical applications for the management of asthma and allergic disease. There will also be roundtable luncheon for faculty and participants to discuss individual cases and clinical problems. Who Should Attend This activity is intended for allergists, pulmonologists, otolaryngologists, internists, pediatricians, family practitioners and other physicians actively engaged in the clinical management and in research of asthma and allergic diseases. The target audience will also include nurses, allied health professionals, clinical research personnel and representatives of the pharmaceutical community. Objectives After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to: - Recognize state-of-the-art advances in the molecular biology of allergic disease - Discuss rational therapeutic decisions in the management of allergy, rhinitis, respiratory disease and asthma - Apply new therapeutic approaches/diagnosis for allergic disease Accreditation Statement The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
