Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Department of Surgery present 35th Annual Topics in Gastroenterology and Hepato-Biliary Update Conference November 11 - 15, 2009 Course Director: Anthony Kalloo, MD Co-directors: Steven Brant, MD; Marcia Canto, MD, MHS; John Clarke, MD; Susan Gearhart, MD; Zhiping Li, MD; Patrick Okolo, MD, MPH The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine - Thomas B. Turner Building - Baltimore, Maryland FEATURING: Live endoscopic demonstrations from The Johns Hopkins Hospital This activity has been approved for 36.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.? Description This activity will provide an update and comprehensive overview of a wide range of topics of interest to the practicing gastroenterologist, surgeon, family physician and internist. The understanding of the pathophysiology, natural history and treatment of diseases of the digestive tract and liver is progressing at a rapid pace. This course will provide practitioners who care for patients with digestive diseases with an in-depth knowledge of recent, cutting-edge advancements in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Moreover, practitioners will be informed about new therapies and treatments on the horizon in order to be prepared to inform patients and field their questions. An important feature of this course is its case panel discussions. One of our frequent challenges is making practical use of knowledge. Therefore, the course format will include case presentation discussion sessions with a multidisciplinary panel of experts from medical, endoscopic and surgical disciplines, discussing diagnostic and management controversies. Among areas of focus for these panels will be inflammatory bowel disease, esophageal disorders, gastrointestinal neoplasia, obesity and liver disease, including liver transplantation. During the lunchtime meeting, attendees will have the opportunity to discuss controversies specific to their personal practices with course faculty. Another key component of the course is the opportunity that attendees will have to witness live endoscopic cases transmitted from The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where endoscopic procedures will be demonstrated by Johns Hopkins faculty. These endoscopic case demonstrations will allow the audience to interact directly with the faculty performing the procedures during the live demonstrations. This year, the addition of a dedicated liver program will be part of the last two days of the course. This will allow attendees to gain detailed knowledge of advances in Hepatology. Who Should Attend This activity is intended for gastroenterologists, surgeons, hepatologists, family practitioners, internists, physician assistants and allied health professionals with an interest in gastroenterology and hepatology. Objectives After attending this activity, the participant should be able to: - Compare the different approaches to endoscopic screening, surveillance, and treatment of Barrett?s esophagus and colon polyps - Outline recent updates on liver transplantation and post-transplant care - Diagnosis and manage emerging and prevalent esophageal conditions such as eosinophilic esophagitis, laryngoesophageal reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease - Define the medical and surgical strategies for the management of diverticular disease and chronic pancreatitis - Describe the current treatment options for severe IBD and for refractory microscopic colitis - Demonstrate the current approaches to various motility disorders, such as gastroparesis and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and be more familiar with the surgical indications for constipation and the use of neuromodulators in functional bowel disease - Discuss the up-to-date management of liver diseases and their complications Accreditation Statement The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
