The Educational Initiative on Constipation (EIC) is a multi-disciplinary, multi-interventional, performance improvement activity that will allow participants to access a variety of learning formats, tools, and best practice guidelines specific to the optimal care and management of patients with IBS-C and chronic constipation.
Significant challenges have been encountered in developing objective clinical measures for the diagnosis of IBS-C and chronic constipation, which contribute considerably to patients being misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed.
The EIC will address knowledge gaps related to the identification, pathophysiology, diagnosis, management, and therapeutic strategies associated with IBS-C and chronic constipation. The EIC will cover 4 main areas in which participants' educational needs have been identified:
- Update on the status of treating constipation
- Pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of patients with constipation (including quality-of-life issues)
- Maximizing therapeutic strategies in patients with constipation
- Role of multidisciplinary care in the treatment of patients with constipation
GOAL
The goal of the EIC is to measurably improve the management of IBS-C by gastroenterologists, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who treat patients with chronic constipation (CC) and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C).
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Increase knowledge of the underlying mechanisms key to IBS-C and chronic constipation
- Review clinical data related to current and future therapies for IBS-C and chronic constipation
- Implement diagnostic and management strategies for IBS-C and chronic constipation, with appropriate utilization of diagnostic criteria and measures
- Consider the need for a multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients with IBS-C and chronic constipation
