  • Back to List
Description
Conventional wisdom holds that medical research should incorporate the analysis of sex and gender differences in basic, clinical, and translational science. However, there has not been a standard, uniform method of instruction in how to meet these important demands. Therefore, this activity was designed to create the permanent foundation for sex and gender accountability in medical research and treatment.

Target Audience
The activity will enable potential researchers, clinicians, and students in the health professions to integrate knowledge of sex and gender differences and similarities with the applicable regulatory requirements.

Content
This online activity is self-paced, comprised of six lessons that cover the following topics:
  • definitions of sex and gender
  • development and implementation of Federal research regulations
  • Cell physiology
  • Developmental biology
  • Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
  • Clinical applications of genomics

Each lesson is followed by a quiz that allows the participants to assess their progress. Participants who complete all six lesson quizzes with a score of at least 70 percent and complete a brief evaluation form will receive credit.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:
  • Define the scientific basis of known sex and gen¬der differences
  • Identify the influence of these sex and gender differences on health outcomes and illness
  • Explain the implications of sex and gender differences for policy, research, and health care
  • Interpret the Federal research regulations
