DESCRIPTION
Opioid use is very prevalent in the U.S.:
‐2.5 million people have used heroin at least once in their lifetime (NHSDA, 2001)
‐There are about 900,000 heroin users in the U.S. (ONDCP, 2002)
‐Lifetime use of a pain reliever for other than medical purposes: 22 million people (NHSDA, 2001)
‐Use of a pain reliever for other than medical purposes in the last month: 3.5 million people (NHSDA, 2001)

The 2000 Drug Abuse Treatment Act allowed physicians in office‐based settings to prescribe (and pharmacists to dispense) schedule III, IV, and V “narcotics” to treat opioid addiction. Federal legislation requires physicians to do eight hours of buprenorphine training to be certified to provide office‐based opioid treatment. After this certification training, physicians can obtain a special DEA number necessary for treatment. The activity will provide eight hours of training as required, and have forms available on the day of training for participants to request their number from the DEA. Additionally the course will focus on other professional topics such as treatment guidelines, limitations, counseling and other pharmacological and non‐pharmacological services.
