DESCRIPTION

Topics in Clinical Medicine began 56 years ago with the late Dr. Philip Tumulty’s belief that faculty should communicate not only its expertise in internal medicine, but also its collegiality and warmth. To maximize the intermingling between faculty and guests, Dr. Tumulty held the course at Hopkins (not a hotel), provided daily lunches with the faculty and conducted a variety of social events. The current course directors are Drs. Gail Berkenblit, Daniel Brotman, John Flynn, Kimberly Peairs, and Myron Weisfeldt. In 2011, Topics remains a course dedicated to providing the best summaries of the advances in internal medicine without pharmaceutical support and extending the hospitality of Johns Hopkins’ faculty.

OBJECTIVES

After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:
  • List the recent changes to the CPR guidelines
  • Discuss recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer
  • Formulate a care plan to manage thyroid disease in the elderly
  • Determine when it is time to refer a patient to the specialist
  • Collaborate with the specialist to improve patient care
  • Assess and manage patients with Type I diabetes
  • Evaluate the elderly patient’s mental statistics and detect signs of delirium and dementia.
