Description:
With the aging population comes new challenges in the management of spinal conditions. It’s essential to keep our community of physicians and health care providers abreast of the new technologies and/or methods used to treat spinal disorders. In this activity, we will cover degenerative disorders (spinal disk herniations, spinal stenosis, degenerative spinal column malalignment) and oncological disorders (primary spinal tumors and metastatic spinal tumors). We will examine new treatment protocols dealing with management of spinal disorders in the osteoporotic patient. We will explore non-surgical management (vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, nerve root blocks, and epidural steroid injections), as well as surgical, both using minimally invasive techniques and standard conventional surgical techniques. Spinal technology is an ever-evolving field. We will use evidence-based medicine to refute or confirm the validity of such new interventions and their impact on functional outcomes.

Objectives:
After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:
• Describe the current treatment options for patients with metastatic spinal column disease
• Describe the current treatment options for patients with lumbar stenosis and neurogenic claudication
• Define the cervical spine pathologies related to rheumatoid arthritis and its surgical management
• Recognize the non-surgical management options for patients with chronic low back and neck pain
• Recognize the selection criteria for patients with low back pain who may benefit from lumbar fusion
• Outline evidence-based literature for management of patients with lumbar disk herniation
