Description:
Topics in Clinical Medicine began 55 years ago with the late Dr. Philip Tumulty's belief that faculty should communicate not only its expertise in internal medicine, but also its collegiality and warmth. To maximize the intermingling between faculty and guests, Dr. Tumulty held the course at Hopkins (not a hotel), provided daily lunches with the faculty and conducted a variety of social events. The current course directors are Drs. Gail Berkenblit, Daniel Brotman, John Flynn, William Schlott, and Myron Weisfeldt. In 2010, Topics remains a course dedicated to providing the best summaries of the advances in internal medicine without pharmaceutical support and extending the hospitality of Johns Hopkins' faculty.
This five-day course will update the physician with the knowledge needed to practice internal and primary care medicine. The topics will deal with recent and significant advances in areas of general clinical interest and will relate to the diagnosis and management of disease. In addition to short, illustrated discussions of specific disease problems, there will be frequent conferences and symposia devoted to important, broad areas of clinical medicine. Several points of view will be represented and adequate time reserved for informal exchange of ideas and direct questioning. Actual patients will be presented to illustrate important aspects of the history. Meet the Professor sessions and Medical Grand Rounds are included again in this year's program.

Objectives:
After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:
- Apply prognostication tools to patients with myeloma to determine which patients should be treated aggressively
- Assess the risk of cardiac surgery in the elderly patient
- Recognize and treat the patient with somatization disorder
- Identify the signs and symptoms of celiac disease in the adult
- Identify common infections that do not require antibiotic treatment
