Description:
The ICGP was founded in 2000 with the mission to further clinical care, research and education in geriatric psychoneuropharmacology by fostering cross-fertilization of scientific knowledge among clinical and preclinical scientists from different related disciplines. The number of elderly people with neuropsychiatric disorders is increasing rapidly all over the world — in developing as well as developed countries. In the U.S., the number of psychiatrically ill older persons is estimated to quadruple by the year 2030. More effective treatment strategies will be needed to lessen the disability and public health burden generated by neuropsychiatric disorders. Advances in such fields as psychopharmacology, therapeutics, genetics and neuro-imaging are occurring at an unprecedented rate. There is an increasing need to translate the knowledge from basic and clinical research into more effective prevention and intervention and strategies. The theme of the ninth annual meeting will be “New Frontiers in Geriatric Psychoneuropharmacology”, with a focus on novel therapeutic interventions, molecular targets and cutting edge methodologies. The program will include scientific sessions as well as plenary lectures from the leading international preclinical and clinical scientists.

Objectives
After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:
• Discuss and integrate scientific information from basic and clinical research relevant to geriatric psychoneuropharmacology
• Describe basic and clinical research methodologies necessary for treatment development and for clinical evaluation with the goal of developing more effective prevention and intervention approaches to prevent and treat neuropsychiatric disorders in aging individuals
• Apply the information obtained to improve the health and well-being of the aging individuals with neuropsychiatric disorders who are residing in many culturally distinct societies world-wide
