Description:
The incidence of breast cancer in the United States exceeds 250,000 women for the year 2009. This number continues to grow as baby boomers enter midlife, increasing the population denominator. Also, 41,000 women died of this disease in 2009. Despite there being specific standards of care and treatment correlated with specific diagnostic stages of the disease, in actual practice, there continues to be controversy as to the most appropriate management of some breast cancer patients. This can be due in part to the comorbidities the patient may have that accompany her disease, the age of the patient, compliance of the patient with the recommended treatment plan or other factors. Based on feedback from the last bi-annual breast cancer conference held, controversy in the selection of the treatment plan and delivery of care may also be dependent on the knowledge and experience of the treating physician(s). The goal of this conference is to discuss the management of controversial issues that affect all disciplines including surgical, medical, radiation, pathology, breast imaging, plastic surgery, and genetics. Presentations will engage the audience in active participation through pre and post opinion electronic-generated surveys and speakers will provide a pros and cons discussion regarding each topic discussed. The outcome should be a better understanding of the management of patients in the presence of unusual clinical presentations. Some outcomes will be the reduction in the use of healthcare resources that result in over-utilization of tests/scans, improvements in quality of care and more effective management of patients.

Objectives:
After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:
- Recognize the clinical issues of controversy related to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients.
- Identify ways to incorporate learned knowledge from the conference to apply in your own practice setting
- Discuss the rationale for the differences of opinion regarding the management of breast cancer.
