Description:
The Human Genome Project (HGP) and the continuing rapid progress in genetics and genomics are producing new insights and vast amounts of information that will ultimately revolutionize medicine. Increasingly, we are identifying a genetic contribution to all human disease and the prospect of genetic testing for predisposition to disease, molecular diagnosis, prognosis and response to treatment is becoming a reality. In short, genetic information about individual patients is more and more relevant for all of medicine. These developments are giving rise to a new individualized view of health and disease: “genetic medicine”.
This 1-1/2 day course is designed to highlight the new discoveries in genetic medicine for use in your clinical practice TODAY.

Objectives:
After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:
1) Recognize the genetic and environmental bases of the individuality of each patient
2) Identify online resources for genetic-testing and interpretation
3) State the genetic components of adult and childhood common complex diseases
4) Discuss the basis for pharmacogenetics in the primary care setting
5) Interpret and use information and resources to answer patient’s questions about genetics and medicine
